TURN OFF THE LIGHT (Music Review)

For anyone who is a Halloween fanatic (that’s why you’re here, right?), you know that the whole month of October is a celebration of Halloween, not just the 31st. So in order to celebrate Halloween, a singer by the name of Kim Petras releases a Halloween themed album for you to shake and rattle your bones to (I’m not sorry for saying this). Last year for October 2018, she released her first part, Turn Off the Light, Vol. 1, and it was a smash hit with her fans called “Bunheads”, and they have been begging for a part two.

Now you may be asking—who is Kim Petras? Kim Petras is an up and coming pop star from Germany who was also the youngest person to go under the knife for gender confirmation surgery. Kim’s breakthrough started in the gay night clubs, where they would play her music. From there on, she’s gotten the recognition she deserves, and she’s been spilling hit after hit from there on.

Kim’s first album, Turn Off the Light, Vol. 1, is an eight part ep that tells a story. Each song transitions into one another, and it’s what makes her good at what she does. The songs are not scary like Pierce the Veil, but they’re a take pop music with a funky, spooky twist. Her Halloween ep’s are what you want to play at your Halloween party. Songs like TRANSlyvania (have I mentioned I love her?) and O m E N  give a heart racing, eery type of vibe that will make you crave Halloween to come back sooner rather than later. Plus, she has an appearance from the mistress of dark herself, Elvira in the song Turn Off The Light .

Since the release of Turn Off the Light, Vol. 1, her bunhead’s have been asking for a part two, and in early September of 2019, she initially announced that Turn Off the Light, Vol. 2  would be coming for October. But she took a twist and, in her own words, will be giving her fans “the whole damn story”. Kim then released Turn Off the Light on October first for all of her bunhead’s to listen to all October long. Along with following up to the release of both albums, Kim posted heavily edited photos to her Instagram of herself, “according to Paper, “styled as a sexy dead Victoria’s Secret angel/Hades side-chick/goth middle schooler’s notebook-doodled fantasy.”

My favorite songs from both Turn Off the Light, Vol.1 and Turn Off the Light are O m E N, TRANSlyvania, Turn Off the Light (ft. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark), Boo! Bitch, Purgatory, <demons>, and Everybody Dies. Kim Petras is truly an up and coming pop star. This was her part of her  Era 1 phase, and if this is only phase one, I cannot wait to see what she will do next.

Plus, we need to give credit to the creator of this awesome artwork of Kim from her first album. They made it look like an old, vintage vinyl album cover and I am here for it and all of their other album artwork that they have created.
